I am really really excited to be reading Ceremony. The way the book is set up (incredibly fragment) challenges me to interpret its meanings and understand it. This in turn I know will help me decipher a more complicated piece on the AP exam. Native American culture and history is very interesting to me as well as I am a quarter Lipan Apache.
Practicing essay writing has also begun lately, which I am glad. The exam is going to sneak up on us and we need to be prepared. I still kind of struggle to organize my thoughts and articulate them, but I guess that is what practice is for. I think I am better than I was at the beginning of the year as I have become more comfortable analyzing pieces. This practice will be invaluably helpful as we prepare to do real responses in the coming weeks.
hah I disagree: the exam won't sneak up on us, it'll hit us suddenly like a bus the weekend before. I also need to get better at articulating my ideas, and coming up with specific ideas as well. I think I have gotten better, but I still suck. I wasn't looking forward to reading Ceremony, but after annotating 150 pages in one sitting I decided it wasn't nearly as bad as I was thinking. I didn't enjoy it hugely, but it wasn't a difficult read and it didn't feel like it was using native culture as a gimmick or anything.
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed the set up of the book too. It forced me to actually pay attention to what I was reading in order to figure out what was even going on. I can't say I'm glad that we're practicing essays, though. They're miserable affairs. I don't even know how much better I've gotten throughout the year, either. The AP exam will certainly be interesting.
