One thing in particular I noticed during my close read were the amount of metaphors and allusions Shakespeare included in the play. Hamlet speaks in figurative language for what seemed like 75% of the play! I completely moved right over these the first time I read it but I think it gives the play's dialogue a lot of meat and drama. Overall, I really started to like Hamlet once I started to understand it. Hamlet's character is really complex and it's crazy to think about how long ago the play was written. I'm sure I will come to appreciate the play even more as we dissect further in class.

Response to Course Material #5
We finally made it, the last response to course material. Time really flew by! Since the last response, we have read through Hamlet entirely and watched two different Hamlet movies. I'm sad to say that after all of that and an entire close read, I am just beginning to really understand the play. There is something about the dated English that makes it very difficult for me to comprehend. I think the movies were definitely beneficial to my understanding of what happened in certain scenes, and certain interpretations of them. The close read helped me identify a lot of the motifs and deeper meanings. So even though a lot of us often complain about the amount of work we do pertaining to one piece, I really appreciated all of it this time.

I agree totally. I began to get comfortable with Shakespeare's English because of all the time we spent with Hamlet. Hopefully that effect lasts. I personally didn't gain much from the close reading, but it helped reinforce what I did get from Holmes's info. And even though I know what I think of Hamlet's character and whatnot I know that I'm not definitely right and discussion is still very interesting.
