Response to Course Material #3

Recently in class we have been studying Death of a Salesman, which I have found to be shockingly similar to our last focus, The American Dream.  I'm not certain if the entire year is going to have a focus on American ideals, but I guess that will make itself apparent once we read the next work.  We have not discussed too much about the deeper meanings of Death of Salesman, but I missed Friday so we might have talked more about it.  Hopefully both of these texts will prove to be useful on the AP exam which I am sure they will be (otherwise why else would we be reading them.)
Another thing we did in class is practice multiple choice questions on the AP exam.  The application of this practice is obvious because we will get better at answering multiple choice questions.  We identified the different types of wrong answers and I was surprised to see how the practice questions tended to have them all.  The different wrong answers included too narrow, too broad, opposite, We will be well prepared to avoid the traps that the exam writers have set up for us.
Finally, we did work out of the textbook.  I thought this was beneficial because not only did it give us tone practice, it exposed us to some other authors that we haven't studied.  These included Langston Hughes and Amy Tan.  Interestingly enough, they were about the American Dream.  Additionally, Mohan and my presentation was successful in informing the class about our poem and making the class laugh.

  1. I think you did a good job with this, and I could really hear your voice come through it. I like that you tied DOS to the AP exam, because I've definitely been thinking the same thing about the plays we've read. One thing I think you could work on is going deeper. You did a pretty good job of not just saying what we did, but adding your thoughts to that. I do think you could do more with this to get more out of the class. Other than that, great job!

  3. Hi Santos,
I liked how you connected all of the pieces we have read in this class to American ideals. I noticed this as well. I agree with Bri in that you could go deeper into your personal thoughts on DOS. What do you think of the characters? Can you relate to them? Do you agree with these American ideals? I understand that you weren't in class for that day, but now that we have discussed DOS more in depth and have watched the movie twice, I think you will definitely have more to blog about! In addition to personally connecting with DOS, how well did the multiple choice practice go for you? Did you use the techniques we learned in class? Personally, I felt that the AP Lit questions were quite similar to the reading sections of the SAT and ACT tests. I do think, however, that the stories in the AP Lit exam are more difficult than in standardized tests. Did you see any connections to your previous tests and the practice AP exam? Did that help you? Overall, I think you did a great job analyzing what we did in class, but you could respond more to it by adding what you personally thought and experienced. Keep up the good work!

  4. Santos,
I really like how you have tied the different pieces that we have read together. I have commented on multiple peoples' blogs encouraging them to do so and feel like you did a really good job of doing it. Both Brianna and Julie talked about going into more detail about DOS, but when we wrote this blog we had just started DOS and i didn't include much about it in my blog either because we really discussed it in very much detail, but in your next course summary blog i expect that you will go into a lot more detail about your opinions of DOS. I agree with Julie that you could have talked more about how learning about the AP lit multiple choice questions retaliates to things outside of AP lit. I also felt like your voice doesn't really come out in this response. You talked about how many of the works we have read so far talk about the American Dream so you could have talked about your America is Sick rap or your own opinions about the American dream to really express your voice in these blogs.
